It is an international agency prompted by war horrors. The Geneva Convention of 1864 laid down the principles assuring the safety of ambulances, hospitals, stores and personnel distinguished by the emblem of the Red Cross. This symbol was adopted by reversing the order of the colours of the Swiss flag which has a red background with white cross.
